  1. ARES/Data Input Help File    INPUT.HLP

  3.   ARES/Data has four input fields plus a message field.
  4.   Enter the four fields and any message, in order, with separators
  5.   between the fields.  The only valid separator is the comma.  Within
  6.   a field, leading and trailing blanks are ignored, but imbedded
  7.   blanks ARE significant.  If no value is desired for a particular
  8.   field, just skip the field by adding an extra comma.

  11.   field1,field2,field3,field4,message<cr>

  13.     (<cr> means carriage return)

  15. Details:
  16.   1.  FIELD1 - FIELD4
  17.  
  18.   The four fields are totally general.  Each can have up to 20
  19.   characters, with imbedded blanks.  Entries can be in upper
  20.   or lower case, or a mixture, but are converted to UPPER case
  21.   before being stored in the database.  The meaning of each field is
  22.   defined in real-time by the ARES officials, depending upon the
  23.   nature of the event.  The sysop can issue a "labels" command that
  24.   will give specific names to each of the four fields to help the
  25.   operators remember what they mean.  Similarly, the remote packet
  26.   operator can type "labels<cr>" to see the current label definitions.

  28.   2.  MESSAGE
  29.  
  30.   MESSAGE is a free-form field that can be up to 72 characters long.
  31.   It could contain a message, a phone number, an address, or other
  32.   information deemed useful for the incident.

  34.   3.  EXAMPLES OF DATA INPUT

  36.         smith, jack, 555-1212, shelter4, home addr 650 Henry Rd<cr>
  37.         jones, mary, 555-9901, shelter1<cr>

  39.   All of the input information is stored in the database
  40.   as a record of the status and location of a particular person,
  41.   place, or thing at a particular time and date.  The time and date
  42.   and call of the person entering the data are added automatically by
  43.   the ARES/Data program.  Further STATUS INPUT packets for the same
  44.   person, place, or thing will also be saved in the database.  The time
  45.   and date and origin (at the beginning of the message field) will
  46.   identify the most recent information.

  48.   4.  Responses

  50.   The ARES/Data Database will acknowledge your input, along with the
  51.   time of the entry, and that record's RECORD NUMBER.  For example:

  53.     1450: data input accepted, #234.
  54.  
  55.   or, by sending an error message requiring a re-entry.
  56.  
  57.   To get information about how to DELETE or UPDATE records, use the
  58.   command GET CHANGE.HLP.
